Zante is one of the favourite Greek islands, as it is reputedly the sunniest of all the Greek islands. It is also the most southerly of the Ionian Islands, its beautiful scenery and excellent sandy beaches make it an ideal holiday destination. Zante is also one of the greenest of the Greek islands, blossoming in the early spring and late September to produce a carpet of wild flowers on the hillsides and a riot of colourful flowers throughout the year. During Venetian rule the island was referred to as Fiore de Levante, Flower of the East. On Zante everything is different. Listen to the musical stories sang at the tavernas or visit the historic wineries, the stalactites and the Blue Caves, the sight of the Shipwreck now sunk into the sand and the cave of St. Damian. The capital and main harbour of Zakynthos is called Zakynthos Town, or Zante, or Chora and has a population of about 12,000 inhabitants. The capital of Zakynthos also has a Museum of post-Byzantine art which stands on the Plateia Solomos, as well as a museum dedicated to the life and work of the Greek novelist and play writer Grigorios Xenopoulos, located close to the Church of Agios Dionysios. Weather: It's Mediterranean climate provides hot, dry, sunny summers and mild winters. Temperatures average in around 25° Celsius from about April and May, peaking in the summer with daily highs of around 30° Celsius no uncommon. As you head into the autumn and winter, temperatures do decline and there are more cloudy days. However, the sun is never far away in Zante so you can still get a tan even when it's cold and wet back home. Attractions: There is plenty to keep you entertained while on holidays in Zante. There is the chance to learn to dive. With the help of a qualified instructor you'll get the opportunity to dive beneath the sea and observe octopus, mule seals and logger head turtles in their natural habitat. If you prefer hire a bicycle and explore this amazing island there is so much to see tell me more. Zakynthos is home to the endangered Loggerhead Turtle, Caretta, Caretta. The Bay of Laganas is the most important breeding ground for the Mediterranean Loggerhead, although they can be found in Turkey and Italy as well.Romantic Holidays: Away from the crowds and tourist resorts Zakynthos offers an idyllic destination for a quiet romantic holiday. Explore the mountainous and picturesque villages of Kiliomeno, Exo Hora, Louha, Volimes and Orthonies and watch the sunset from Keri village or scenic Shiza at the top of Kampi. Lose yourself in the neighbourhoods of Zante Town and stroll on golden sandy beaches of Kalamaki and Gerakas. Enjoy moon-lit dinners by the sea and enjoy cocktails until the sunrise in the many atmospheric lounge bars in the town and Argassi.
Weddings in the Sun: Zakynthos is a top destination for beach weddings. More and more couples choose to let their hair down and start their new life under the Ionion sun. Greeks love weddings and really know how to throw a party. There are many local providers that will make sure all arrangements are in place for you from the actual ceremony and reception to accommodation, video and photography packages. A brilliant way to have your wedding on your honeymoon! On this island everything is different - the musical stories sang at the tavernas, the historic wineries, the stalactite & the blue caves, the sight of the 'shipwreck' now sunk in the sand, the cave of St. Damian and so much more that you must explore for yourself. "Reparo" in the local dialect means either resting or relaxing, that if you come and visit you will certainly come here again! |
