Zakynthos, or Zante as it is more commonly known, is one of the favourite Greek islands, as it is reputedly the sunniest of all the Greek islands. It is also the most southerly of the Ionian Islands, its beautiful scenery and excellent sandy beaches make it an ideal holiday destination. Zante is also one of the greenest of the Greek islands, blossoming in the early spring and late September to produce a carpet of wild flowers on the hillsides and a riot of colourful flowers throughout the year. During Venetian rule the island was referred to as Fiore de Levante, Flower of the East. On Zante everything is different. Listen to the musical stories sang at the tavernas or visit the historic wineries, the stalactites and the Blue Caves, the sight of the Shipwreck now sunk into the sand and the cave of St. Damian. The capital and main harbour of Zakynthos is called Zakynthos Town, or Zante, or Chora and has a population of about 10.000 inhabitants. The capital of Zakynthos also has a Museum of post-Byzantine art which stands on the Plateia Solomos, as well as a museum dedicated to the life and work of the Greek novelist and play writer Grigorios Xenopoulos, located close to the Church of Agios Dionysios. There is so much to see, you must come and explore for yourself.
WeatherThe weather in Zante is about as far away from the UK as possible. It's Mediterranean climate provides hot, dry, sunny summers and mild winters. Temperatures average in around 25° Celsius from about April and May, peaking in the summer with daily highs of around 30° Celsius no uncommon. As you head into the autumn and winter, temperatures do decline and there are more cloudy days. However, the sun is never far away in Zante so you can still get a tan even when it's cold and wet back home. AttractionsThere is plenty to keep you entertained while on holidays in Zante. If you're an adrenaline junkie there is the chance to learn to dive. With the help of a qualified instructor you'll get the opportunity to dive beneath the sea and observe octopus, mule seals and logger head turtles in their natural habitat. If you prefer to take it a bit easier, why not try a boat excursion to Shipwreck Beach - a beach only accessible by boat and famed for it's crystal blue waters and golden sands.
Zakynthos is home to the endangered Loggerhead Turtle, Caretta, Caretta. The Bay of Laganas is the most important breeding ground for the Mediterranean Loggerhead, although they can be found in Turkey and Italy as well. The sandy beaches of the Lagana Bay are now a protected area. Turtles return to the beach they were born on to nest, the mating season is around April - June with the hatchlings being born about 60 days after the eggs have been laid. This of course coincides with the peak holiday season. There are six main nesting beaches in the Bay of Lagana, by far the most important of these is Sekania. Sekania has one of the highest density of nests in the world the beach measures just 550m in length but can produce over 600 nest per annum. The other beaches in the bay have very much been compromised by tourism in the 80's and 90's. For this reason the WWF - Greece purchased 32.7 hectares of land surrounding Sekania, no one is allowed on this beach and the regulations also ensure that no boats are allowed in this area. It is now considered 'Turtle Paradise'. The beach is guarded daily from June until October. |
