Shipwreck at Smugglers Cove: It is certainly Zante's most famous landmark. The Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos: The Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos is situated in Solomou Square, in Zakynthos town. Here you can admire a rich collection of hagiographies from the Byzantine times to the 19th century, Hellenistic and Byzantine sculpture and statues, and some beautiful icon-stands from the island's churches. The Museum houses, the works of great Zakynthian hagiographers such as Doxaras, Koutouzis, Tzanes, Kandounis and Damaskinos The Cultural Centre of Zakynthos and the Library:Another imposing building next to church of Saint Nikolaos on the Mole. It houses the Cultural Centre of Zakynthos and the renowned Public Library. The Library includes a small art gallery, small dolls with local costumes, photographic material and the historical archive of Zakynthos with codices and documents. Monastery of St George Gremon: It is said that pirates destroyed the monastery in 1553, only to have it re-built in a Venetian style in the 17th century. The lodger, famous for its icon stand and roof, was renovated in 1803. Near the monastery, one can see the ruins of a castle which protected the area from pirate raids. Keri: Admire the sunset and the stupendous view of the sea caves below. Skinari: Where the famous Blue Caves are located. At the northern tip of Zante, the afternoon sun shines on the sea to create patterns in every conceivable shade of blue on the cave walls.

The Museum contains an excellent collection of icons from the Byzantine era to the 19th century, magnificent wooded carved iconostases, wall-paintings of 12th-13th and 17th-18th centuries, sculptural works of the Hellenistic, Byzantine and Post-Byzantine periods as well as a model of the town of Zakynthos, during the period 1930-1950.
Zakynthos Marine Park Zakynthos’ Marine Park is located along the southern coast from the promontory of Marathia’s Cape to the beach of Gerakas, including the outback of the beaches of Limni Kerì, Laganas and Kalamaki and the Strofades, two small islands 50 nautical miles southern of Zakynthos. This area presents the main characteristics of the Mediterranean ecosystem, with sandy beaches, emerging rocks and sandy dunes, whereas in the outback there awith spontaneous vegetation. The National Marine Park has been founded in 1999 with the main purpose of defending the particular fauna of the southern part of the island and of its integration with the local society. re thick pinewoods, fertile areas for the agriculture and the Mediterranean landscape. The most important animal specimen to protect are the turtles Caretta-Caretta and the Mediterranean Seals Monachus-Monachus. The turtles are all over the areas of the Park and every year they come back to the sandy beaches south of Zakynthos to breed whereas the seals are usually seen around the bay of Laganas but they prefer the numerous caves of the western coast of the island. |
