Of interest are the two hills: Strani, where Dionysios Solomos was inspired to write the "Ode to Liberty" which after being set to music, became the Greek national anthem; and Bochali, as mentioned earlier; on top of which is the Venetian Castro, with its superb panoramic view of the modern town of Zakynthos and the Ionian sea. The briefest stroll along the streets of the town is enough to convince the visitor that the efforts to preserve the pre-seismic Zakynthian atmosphere are not directed to the buildings alone but to its entire urban fabric. In Zakynthos everything is steeped in nostalgia, with a note of romanticism. The island's picturesque squares, Dionysios Solomos Square and Agios Markos Square, the long coast road, the Strata Marina, old Rougas Square and the modern Alexandrou Roma street, are all reminiscent of times past.

Drive winding roads to the north for peaceful pine covered hills and spectacular cliffs. Take a boat trip to the picture postcard Blue Caves or Smugglers' Cove. Visit Zante Town's Venetian castle ruins and St Mark's Square. Admire breathtaking views from Strani Hill or sail to the mainland to see Olympia, historic birthplace of the Olympics, and climb to the top of Athens' ancient Acropolis.

Zante boasts some of Greece's best beaches, several of which are favourite nesting grounds for loggerhead turtles. Some of the most striking are Laganas, an expanse of golden sand stretching all the way to Kalamaki, and Alykes. Drive from Argassi to Gerakas, on the south-eastern tip, for the most beautiful shores.

The Solomos Museum houses the magnificent tomb of Dionysios
Solomos (1798-1857) and that of the other great Zakynthian poet, Andreas Calvos (1792-1869). In the entrance is a piece of the holly bush on Strani hill in the shadow of which Solomos was inspired to write "Ode to Liberty" in May 1823 which later became the Greek national anthem, and gis poem "The Free Beseiged" in May 1823. The rooms on the upper floor contain objects that had belonged to the great poet and other distinguished Zakynthian scholars as well as collections that have been donated to the museum.

The Zante Carnival

The Carnival in Zakynthos is one of the most favourite fiestas. The carnival lasts 4 weeks but the last 2 weeks is when lots of activities take place.
Inspired by the Venetian Carnival, smaller but full with spirit though, Zakynthos offers a unique group of events and take us back to the past in magic years...

Some of the most famous events are:
The first day when the Carnival starts, a town crier goes around the island and announces the carnival programme in the traditional way.
During the whole carnival period, the atmosphere is one of joy, with lots of dances, parties, parades, all people are in fancy carnival costumes, etc.
Theatrical companies perform in public the Speeches (omilies), which are improvised sketches full of social commentary performed by men wearing carnival costumes.
On both Sundays, the parade of King Carnival makes the tour of the island.

Zante - The capital of the island and one of the most beautiful towns in the Ionian islands, with its western type architecture, the large public library and the museum of Dionysios Solomos . It is situated on the east side of the island and it is your entry point to the island if you are visiting by boat. From this port you can take a boat for a daily cruise around the island. While you are in town enjoy the walks in the wide open squares and visit the Byzantine Museum, the church of Agios Nikolaos tou Molou and the church of Agios Dionysios , the patron saint of the island, where you will have the chance to see his relics.

Gerakas - It is probably the most beautiful beach on the south end of the island, easily accessible by car and frequented also by the sea turtles. The rocky formations on the side of the beach are very interesting.

Vassilikos - It is close to the SE end of the island and you will find it on the way to Gerakas beach. It is situated in a very green area of the island, sparsely inhabited and with a series of very beautiful beaches. Banana beach, Porto Zoro , Porto Roma and Agios Nikolaos are the most beautiful with warm and clear waters. Mavrantzi beach used to be one of the nicest beaches in the area but there are so many people going there, that there is no space for others.

Argasi - The main hotspot for nightlife close to the town of Zakynthos. It has a variety of bars and clubs playing all types of music. If you are staying in town you will definitely visit it. The beach at Argasi is nothing special but it is a very popular holiday resort.

Volimes - Are on the NW side of the island and it is the starting point for those willing to explore the north side of the island with the numerous caves by the sea, the 'shipwreck' and the 'blue cave'.

Alykes - Is a touristy place on the NE side of the island offering an very nice sandy beach and water sports, preferred by families.

Keri - Is a small village on the SW side that has become very popular due to the sea caves created by the forces of nature. The village resembles a lot old Italian villages and that is why a lot of Italians visit it each year.
